SCHLUTER UNDERLAYMENTS

Schluter® DITRA and DITRA-XL are industry-leading uncoupling membranes designed to provide superior protection for tile and stone installations. Available at Sapphirus Stone & Tile Inc., these membranes help prevent cracks in tile caused by subfloor movement while also offering waterproofing and vapor management, ensuring long-lasting durability and performance.
Both DITRA and DITRA-XL feature a unique polyethylene membrane with a grid of square cavities designed to relieve in-plane stresses between the substrate and tile, effectively decoupling the two layers. This technology protects your tile installation from cracking due to natural movements or substrate imperfections, which is especially important in areas with concrete slabs or radiant heating systems.
The main difference between the two products is coverage size and thickness. DITRA comes in a roll size of 3' 3" by 45' 9", covering 150 square feet and is approximately 1/8" thick. DITRA-XL is larger, with a roll size of 4' 11" by 32' 10", covering about 160 square feet, and is slightly thicker to accommodate larger tile formats or more demanding installations.
Both membranes incorporate an anchoring fleece on the underside, which is designed to bond mechanically with thin-set mortar, ensuring secure adhesion to the substrate. This feature, combined with the unique cavity structure, allows for excellent mortar keying on both sides, providing superior stability for tile installations.
In addition to crack isolation, Schluter DITRA membranes provide waterproofing and vapor management. This makes them ideal for wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and balconies, where moisture protection is critical. When paired with Schluter’s waterproofing accessories, such as KERDI-BAND, DITRA membranes create a fully waterproof system that complies with industry standards.
- Provides uncoupling, waterproofing, vapor management and heavy load distribution to maintain the durability and integrity of tiled installations
- DITRA has a nominal thickness of 1/8" (3 mm) - limits tile thickness and height of transitions to lower floor coverings
- Can be installed over concrete, plywood, OSB, gypsum, existing vinyl floors, structural planks, subfloors and radiant floor heating systems
- Features an interlocking rib structure with a non-woven felt underneath that will bond to the substrate without filling the cavities with cement glue
- Quick and easy to install; few tools required; ready to tile immediately
